We've been so humbled by your generosity. Thank you!
To everyone who donated and shared our 2021 Giving Day, Towards24, thank you so much. You helped us smash both our initial goal of raising $300,000 and our revised goal of $400,000, and we couldn't be more grateful.
With your support, we're confident that we'll be able to take massive strides towards making Lifeline Text the 24-hour, around-the-clock service it needs to be.
Many thanks again for our wonderful friends at Domino's registered charity Give for Good for generously matching donations, and a huge thank you to each and every one of you for rallying Towards24.
We're really looking forward to keeping you updated on our Text Crisis Support service.
Why is taking Lifeline Text Towards24 so important?
Currently, if someone contacts Lifeline through our Text Crisis Support service outside operating hours (12 noon to 12 midnight AEST), they’re directed to call Lifeline instead on 13 11 14.
But we know that many people simply can’t do that. They might be in a domestic violence situation, where talking out loud would put them in immediate danger. Or they might be on public transport, commuting to work. Or their mind might just be so dark, their thoughts so scary, that it feels impossible to articulate out loud their feelings and intentions.
That’s why Lifeline Text plays such a critical role in crisis support and suicide prevention. And its why it’s absolutely crucial that the service is available 24-hours-a-day, seven days a week.
The numbers are heartbreaking.
Yesterday, nine Australians took their own lives. Today, another nine will do the same. Research shows that for every person who dies by suicide, at least another 135 are deeply impacted. Friends, family members and entire communities are left devastated and heartbroken.
And behind every statistic is someone’s loved one.
Tara’s older brother, Adam was a bright young man with a keen sense of social justice and a promising future. He also had a pervasive belief that he wasn’t good enough, and not deserving of the life he had.
Early one November morning, Adam took his own life. He was just 20 years old.
Tara is determined—more than 30 years after her brother’s suicide—for Adam’s death not to have been in vain. Like many people, Adam was more comfortable conveying his thoughts and feelings using the written word rather than out loud. Tara believes that if Adam was a young man in Australia today, a service like Lifeline Text might have offered him the connection and hope he needed in his moment of crisis.
Adam took his own life at 1:30am. Currently our Text Crisis Support service ends at midnight because we simply don’t have enough funding to keep it open for any longer.
Please help take Lifeline Text Towards24 today. Donate now.
